What is Biology?

Biology is the science of life and living organisms, derived from the Greek words "bios" meaning "life" and "logos" meaning "study". Biologists study living things, including their physical structures, chemical processes, physiological mechanisms, molecular interactions, life-cycle, adaptions and environment.

Biology Tuition at GCSE and IGCSE

At GCSE level, Biology is either studied as separate subject or makes up a third of Combined Science. As a separate subject, Biology can be studied as Single Science and receive a full GCSE grade. In Combined Science, the extension topics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology are not taken and the exams in all three subjects lead to two GCSE grades, so it is sometimes referred to as Dual Award Science. If a student intends to study Biology at A level then it is best, though not essential, that they take Biology as a Single Science. Assessment is through written exam papers, typically 2 x two hour papers or 3 x 90 minute papers. There is no separate practical assessment or coursework, but questions will be set based on the core practical activities the students will have carried out for themselves.

Biology Tuition at A-Level

For entry into A-Level Biology, many schools would want to see a grade 7 or higher at GCSE, otherwise a student may struggle to do well at A-Level. At A-Level the concepts and ideas studied for GCSE are built upon and taken further, along with some applications of Biology which may include ... A-Level Biology also involves a large amount of practical work. Assessment is typically three written papers, each around two hours long. A-Level Biology can give access to a wide range of University Courses and consequently related careers, such as Physics, Engineering, Astrophysics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, Sports Science and Pharmacy amongst others.

The cost of a Biology tutor in Haslemere can vary depending on several factors, such as qualifications, experience, and whether Face-to-Face or Online. Private Biology tutors in Haslemere may cost anywhere from £15 to £60 per hour. A qualified teacher in Haslemere from Teachers To Your Home, will range from £17.50 per hour for online group tuition, to £50 for Face-to-Face A Level Biology Tuition in Haslemere.

Face-to-face tuition in Haslemere allows for direct interaction and personalized attention from the Biology tutor. It provides a more structured learning environment and can help students stay more motivated and focused. On the other hand, online tuition offers more flexibility in terms of scheduling and location. Students can access Biology tutoring from anywhere and online sessions can be recorded for future reference. Online tuition also tends to be more affordable and can offer a wider range of Biology tutors and subjects. Ultimately, the best choice depends on the individual student's needs and preferences. Younger or SEN students may benefit more from face-to-face tuition, while older students may prefer the convenience and flexibility of online tuition.

Group Biology tutoring provides a supportive environment where students can work together, learn from one another and engage in collaborative problem-solving. It provides students with a variety of perspectives and ideas, which can lead to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Being in a group allows students to work together, communicate effectively, and develop teamwork skills. Group Biology tutoring is often less expensive than one-on-one Biology tutoring, making it more accessible for students who need extra help.

Not every child in Haslemere needs a Biology tutor, but there are many scenarios where tuition will be beneficial. The obvious is if a child is not attending school for whatever reason. If they are at school, a Biology tutor may be needed to stop a student from falling behind, which can lead to disillusionment and behavioural issues; or to get back on track after a poor end-of-year exam result. If a specific learning difficulty or Special Educational Need (SEN) is identified, then Biology Tuition in Haslemere can provide a vital reinforcement. For high stakes exams, such as 11+, Common Entrance (often 13+) for schools in Haslemere, GCSE and A-Level or IB, tuition can provide that final boost to get over the line, the stretch to reach the top grades required for the next stage of education, or assistance with specific exam techniques that may not be taught at school.
