What is Common Entrance?

The Common Entrance Exam

The Common Entrance Exam (also known as CE or the 13+) is taken by pupils as part of the admissions process for Year 9 entry into academically selective Independent Schools at age 13. Common Entrance consists of examinations in Mathematics (three papers: a mental mathematics paper, plus written non-calculator and calculator), English (two papers), Geography, History, Religious Studies, Latin, Classical Greek, plus either a specialist Physics, Chemistry and Biology or a Combined Science. There can also be a choice of four languages: Spanish, French, German or Mandarin, assessed via listening, spoken and written papers. The only compulsory elements of the Common Entrance Exam are Maths, English and a Science, with each schools offering their own combination and subject requirements.

Common Entrance Exams will be scrapped in 18 months

The Common Entrance (CE) for admission at age 11, 12 or 13 to Independent Schools, usually from Preparatory Schools, is to be scrapped in 18 months. Many leading Public Schools now recruit more children from State Primary Schools and increasingly at Year 7 rather than at Year 9. Common Entrance was introduced in 1904. The "pass mark" varies widely and is high for the more prestigious schools but can be much lower for schools where academic standards are less demanding. For over a century CE has worked well, ensuring that privately-educated children transfer to an Independent School that matches their academic abilities and potential. Scholarships and bursaries are also available to rovide opportunities to a wider range of children, including those from less-privileged backgrounds.

The cost of a Common Entrance Exams tutor in Staines can vary depending on several factors, such as qualifications, experience, and whether Face-to-Face or Online. Private Common Entrance Exams tutors in Staines may cost anywhere from £15 to £60 per hour. A qualified teacher in Staines from Teachers To Your Home, will range from £17.50 per hour for online group tuition, to £50 for Face-to-Face A Level Common Entrance Exams Tuition in Staines.

Face-to-face tuition in Staines allows for direct interaction and personalized attention from the Common Entrance Exams tutor. It provides a more structured learning environment and can help students stay more motivated and focused. On the other hand, online tuition offers more flexibility in terms of scheduling and location. Students can access Common Entrance Exams tutoring from anywhere and online sessions can be recorded for future reference. Online tuition also tends to be more affordable and can offer a wider range of Common Entrance Exams tutors and subjects. Ultimately, the best choice depends on the individual student's needs and preferences. Younger or SEN students may benefit more from face-to-face tuition, while older students may prefer the convenience and flexibility of online tuition.

Group Common Entrance Exams tutoring provides a supportive environment where students can work together, learn from one another and engage in collaborative problem-solving. It provides students with a variety of perspectives and ideas, which can lead to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Being in a group allows students to work together, communicate effectively, and develop teamwork skills. Group Common Entrance Exams tutoring is often less expensive than one-on-one Common Entrance Exams tutoring, making it more accessible for students who need extra help.

Not every child in Staines needs a Common Entrance Exams tutor, but there are many scenarios where tuition will be beneficial. The obvious is if a child is not attending school for whatever reason. If they are at school, a Common Entrance Exams tutor may be needed to stop a student from falling behind, which can lead to disillusionment and behavioural issues; or to get back on track after a poor end-of-year exam result. If a specific learning difficulty or Special Educational Need (SEN) is identified, then Common Entrance Exams Tuition in Staines can provide a vital reinforcement. For high stakes exams, such as 11+, Common Entrance (often 13+) for schools in Staines, GCSE and A-Level or IB, tuition can provide that final boost to get over the line, the stretch to reach the top grades required for the next stage of education, or assistance with specific exam techniques that may not be taught at school.
