What is Common Entrance?

The Common Entrance Exam

The Common Entrance Exam (also known as CE or the 13+) is taken by pupils as part of the admissions process for Year 9 entry into academically selective Independent Schools at age 13. Common Entrance consists of examinations in Mathematics (three papers: a mental mathematics paper, plus written non-calculator and calculator), English (two papers), Geography, History, Religious Studies, Latin, Classical Greek, plus either a specialist Physics, Chemistry and Biology or a Combined Science. There can also be a choice of four languages: Spanish, French, German or Mandarin, assessed via listening, spoken and written papers. The only compulsory elements of the Common Entrance Exam are Maths, English and a Science, with each schools offering their own combination and subject requirements.

Common Entrance Exams will be scrapped in 18 months

The Common Entrance (CE) for admission at age 11, 12 or 13 to Independent Schools, usually from Preparatory Schools, is to be scrapped in 18 months. Many leading Public Schools now recruit more children from State Primary Schools and increasingly at Year 7 rather than at Year 9. Common Entrance was introduced in 1904. The "pass mark" varies widely and is high for the more prestigious schools but can be much lower for schools where academic standards are less demanding. For over a century CE has worked well, ensuring that privately-educated children transfer to an Independent School that matches their academic abilities and potential. Scholarships and bursaries are also available to rovide opportunities to a wider range of children, including those from less-privileged backgrounds.

Location
Home Tuition: Involves a Common Entrance Exams tutor coming to your home in Taunton to provide one-on-one instruction. This offers convenience as you don't need to travel. Online Tuition: This can take place anywhere with an internet connection. Small Group Tuition: Typically with between 2 to 4 children, and often occurs in a physical location such as your home, though it can also be online.

Individual Attention
Home Tuition: Offers the highest level of individual attention, as the Common Entrance Exams tutor focuses solely on one student. Online Tuition: Still allows for one-to-one attention, but it may be slightly less personal than home tuition due to potential distractions. Small Group Tuition: Offers less individual attention as the Common Entrance Exams tutor must divide their time and attention among multiple students.

Cost
Home Tuition: This tends to be more expensive because it involves one-on-one teaching, and the Common Entrance Exams tutor is required to travel to your home, in Taunton. Online Tuition: Often more affordable than home tuition as your Common Entrance Exams tutor does not need to travel but may still cost more than small group tuition. Small Group Tuition: Generally, this is the most cost-effective option, as the costs are shared among several families.

Flexibility
Home Tuition: Offers flexibility in terms of scheduling and curriculum, as your Common Entrance Exams tutor will only be working with your child. Online Tuition: Provides flexibility in terms of location and may offer a wider selection of Common Entrance Exams tutors. Small Group Tuition: Lessons will be more difficult to schedule as lesson times will have to fit in with other families.

Interaction
Home Tuition: Offers in-person interaction, which can be beneficial for students who learn better through face-to-face communication. Online Tuition: Provides interaction through video conferencing tools and chat, which can be engaging but may not suit everyone's learning style. Small Group Tuition: Allows for peer interaction, which can benefit collaborative learning and discussions.

The choice between home, online, or small group Common Entrance Exams tuition in Taunton depends on your preferences, budget, and the student's specific educational needs. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to consider these factors when deciding.
