The Year One Phonics Screening Check

The Year One Phonics Screening Check is taken by all children in Year 1 in England, usually taken at the beginning of June. The Phonics Screening Check shows teachers how well children are progressing in phonics and it identifies any pupils who may need additional support in phonics so that they stay on track to become fluent readers.

What does it test?

Whilst it is compulsory for all Year 1 pupils to take the check it is not a formal test and takes place in a relaxed environment with the class teacher and one child at a time. There are a few practice words to begin with, to make sure children understand the task and, as it is administered on a 1:1 basis, the teacher will understand each child's individual needs and phonics skill level.

The check takes around 10 minutes to complete, but there is no formal time limit, so children can take as long or as little time as they require. The check is made up of 40 words and non-words that children will read one at a time. The 40 words and non-words are split into two sections: one section contains simple words made up of 3 or 4 letters and the other section contains more complex words made up of 5-8 letters.

How is it marked?

Children are scored against a national standard and the results are whether children fall within, above or below the standard. The pass mark is not published to schools until after the test at the end of June, when all schools nationwide have administered the Phonics Screening Check. The pass mark is around 32 so in order to pass the check children had to read at least 32 words correctly out of 40. Parents will be notified about how well their child did but the results for each school are not published.

If a child does not pass the Phonics Screening Check they will be given extra phonics support in school and they will re-take the check again at the end of Year 2.

Home Tuition: Involves a Key Stage One tutor coming to your home to provide one-on-one instruction. This offers convenience as you don't need to travel. Online Tuition: This can take place anywhere with an internet connection. Small Group Tuition: Typically with between 2 to 4 children, and often occurs in a physical location such as your home, though it can also be online.

Individual Attention
Home Tuition: Offers the highest level of individual attention, as the Key Stage One tutor focuses solely on one student. Online Tuition: Still allows for one-to-one attention, but it may be slightly less personal than home tuition due to potential distractions. Small Group Tuition: Offers less individual attention as the Key Stage One tutor must divide their time and attention among multiple students.

Cost
Home Tuition: This tends to be more expensive because it involves one-on-one teaching, and the Key Stage One tutor is required to travel to your home. Online Tuition: Often more affordable than home tuition as your Key Stage One tutor does not need to travel but may still cost more than small group tuition. Small Group Tuition: Generally, this is the most cost-effective option, as the costs are shared among several families.

Flexibility
Home Tuition: Offers flexibility in terms of scheduling and curriculum, as your Key Stage One tutor will only be working with your child. Online Tuition: Provides flexibility in terms of location and may offer a wider selection of Key Stage One tutors. Small Group Tuition: Lessons will be more difficult to schedule as lesson times will have to fit in with other families.

Interaction
Home Tuition: Offers in-person interaction, which can be beneficial for students who learn better through face-to-face communication. Online Tuition: Provides interaction through video conferencing tools and chat, which can be engaging but may not suit everyone's learning style. Small Group Tuition: Allows for peer interaction, which can benefit collaborative learning and discussions.

The choice between home, online, or small group Key Stage One tuition depends on your preferences, budget, and the student's specific educational needs. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to consider these factors when deciding.
