Tutor Haslemere

A highly experienced, positive and encouraging teacher currently with 25 years of experience. Having taught all subjects to children from Year 2 up to Year 8 (13+ CE and scholarship), I have a strong grasp of children's needs and expected progress at every step of their formative years. I have been a Head of English (my specialism), and teach Maths and Reasoning (verbal and non verbal) to primary age children, as well as preparation for 11+ exams. My pupils have gained places at a range of independent schools near Guildford and across the South East. I am also experienced working with children who have Specific Learning difficulties. I look forward to instilling children with skills and a sense of confidence, inspiring them with engaging, targeted, effective teaching so that they take pleasure in learning and experience enjoyment and success.

I have been lucky enough to work as a full-time private tutor for several years, having tutored close to 200 private tutees and countless others while working as a classroom teacher. During my 15+ years of teaching, no two days have ever been the same, and no two students have ever been the same either, so over the years, I have learnt many ways in which to get my point across, from sensible diagrams and flow charts to silly stories and memory games. The joy of science is that there is always something in it for everyone, and it's easy to find something to engage the most reluctant learner and then build on their knowledge from there. If all else fails, most students can be lured into a science lesson by our two very friendly house cats, who are often found sitting regally on a student's knee or trying their best to stand on the keyboard and join in during an online lesson.

I have enjoyed over 20 years of experience teaching children in Primary Schools, predominantly EYFS and KS1 classes. I believe that happy children learn, so it is important to establish a trusting bond and provide interesting and well-planned lessons that cater to each child's needs. Furthermore, ongoing informal assessments are essential to establish the next steps in learning. I have worked with children who have had a range of special educational needs, including some children who have had 1:1 support from a TA. I understand the need for good communication between myself and all parents, as well as with other agencies for those children with SEN. I have been a Senior Leader for over ten years and understand the need for strong leadership.

Reviews for tutors in Haslemere

5.0

My son had recently moved to the U.K. from Hong Kong to enter Y11 and requested help with English literature and Language as the curriculum is somewhat different. Desi identified the areas he needed help and over time built my sons confidence and knowledge with her excellent teaching skills. He is sitting his GCSEs now and is optimistic and enthusiastic about his expectations with the papers. I highly recommend Desi to anyone looking for a caring and mentoring tutor. She also volunteered feedback with my daughters IB personal statement and refused to accept additional compensation for the feedback. Desi is one of a kind. Thank you Desi. Mr Hatter

I am a qualified teacher of German and French (PGCE) with an MSc in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford. I have taught in state and independent schools and am currently the Assistant Head of Senior School (pastoral) at Frensham Heights School. I am passionate about finding the right way of learning specific to the childs needs, and I recognise the challenges of learning languages, especially when it is a compulsory subject and not necessarily a child's keen interest. I have an excellent record of my students achieving above their predicted grades at GCSE and A-Level, as well as passing school entrance exams, and aim to instil a love of languages in all my students. I have also taught literature to a high level and can help prepare for the English GCSE exams, as well as SATs, and 11+ and preparation.

Because we only ever work with qualified and experienced teachers in Haslemere, you will always get a highly experienced teacher who is safe, reliable and up to speed with the current curriculum and exam requirements. There is no excellent learning without excellent teaching, and our teachers are expected to teach in a way that inspires and motivates. We have over 20,000 talented teachers providing tuition, chosen for their broad range of experience, professionalism, academic specialisms, passion, and dedication to their students. We only ever offer qualified teachers as tutors, as we believe professional teachers provide the highest quality of tuition.

Location
Home Tuition: Involves a teacher coming to your home in Haslemere to provide one-on-one instruction. This offers convenience as you don't need to travel. Online Tuition: This can take place anywhere with an internet connection. Small Group Tuition: Typically with between 2 to 4 children, and often occurs in a physical location such as your home, though it can also be online.

Individual Attention
Home Tuition: Offers the highest level of individual attention, as the tutor focuses solely on one student. Online Tuition: Still allows for one-to-one attention, but it may be slightly less personal than home tuition due to potential distractions. Small Group Tuition: Offers less individual attention as the tutor must divide their time and attention among multiple students.

Cost
Home Tuition: This tends to be more expensive because it involves one-on-one teaching, and the tutor is required to travel to your home, in Haslemere. Online Tuition: Often more affordable than home tuition as your tutor does not need to travel but may still cost more than small group tuition. Small Group Tuition: Generally, this is the most cost-effective option, as the costs are shared among several families.

Flexibility
Home Tuition: Offers flexibility in terms of scheduling and curriculum, as your tutor will only be working with your child. Online Tuition: Provides flexibility in terms of location and may offer a wider selection of tutors. Small Group Tuition: Lessons will be more difficult to schedule as lesson times will have to fit in with other families.

Interaction
Home Tuition: Offers in-person interaction, which can be beneficial for students who learn better through face-to-face communication. Online Tuition: Provides interaction through video conferencing tools and chat, which can be engaging but may not suit everyone's learning style. Small Group Tuition: Allows for peer interaction, which can benefit collaborative learning and discussions.

The choice between home, online, or small group tuition in Haslemere depends on your preferences, budget, and the student's specific educational needs. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to consider these factors when deciding.
