English Literature Tutor in Dartford

I have always been passionate about teaching and tutoring English. As a secondary qualified English teacher with over fifteen years of experience, I am knowledgeable and conversant with methods that help students excel in the study of English. A big barrier that students face to improving in English is reading - many students do not read in their spare time; as a result, their writing and overall communication skills suffer. In my career as a teacher, I have supported students from Key Stage 2 right through to Key Stage 5. I have tutored primary-aged children to help them prepare for their SATs; I have also taught secondary-aged students to help prepare them for their GCSEs. At the moment, I am working as a GCSE English lecturer at Southwark College, helping GCSE English resit students to pass their English language exams. I have two years of experience working as an English teacher, teaching from years 7 through to 11. I offer a nurturing, writing-focused approach to tutoring. My methodology for teaching analytical writing involves focusing on specific writing skills that can be incorporated into pieces of writing. I tend to steer away from using PEE/PETAL paragraph structures - I find that while these have their place, leaning too heavily on them can often limit pupils' ability to express ideas in their writing. I have experience teaching the following GCSE texts to AQA standard: Jekyll and Hyde, Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, Power & Conflict poetry, along with the Language papers. Please drop me a message if you have any questions!

English Literature Tuition in Dartford

Amazing! Emma really engaged with my son and his confidence with English grew over the weeks, helping him prepare for his GCSE's. Thank you. Ms Appleton

Rachel, you have really embraced the role and been a tremendous asset to us, an absolute pleasure to work with. Mr Glennon

Hannah worked with my son to support him in an English GCSE resit. Hannah's unique approach to tailoring lessons to my son's interests and needs meant that he found them engaging and actually looked forward to them! Hannah helped my son improve his overall score by two grades, all in a short three months of tuition. Thoroughly recommend. Mrs Cassius

Near the end of year 10, I sought Hannah's assistance to improve my GCSE English Literature and Language performance. When I initially talked to her, my performance in English was around a grade 7, and I had gotten a grade 5 in one piece of work. However, I was determined to get grade 9's in both English GCSEs and told this to Hannah in our first session together. She was encouraging and supported my goal to get these grades. In the first session, we dedicated time to highlighting my objectives, aims and also what parts of the course I wanted to focus on. This was really useful as it provided a clear and actionable timetable that we could follow, and we continued to make these at the beginning of each term. In the sessions themselves, Hannah would start with some complex vocabulary which would help improve and look impressive in my GCSE essays, they also linked to the rest of the session so that I could fully understand and contextualise them. During the sessions, she would briefly summarise the part of the text we would be analysing. Then she would provide me with a paragraph where I would talk about how I would analyse it, which techniques I would use, and context for the paragraphs. In other sessions, we would discuss essay plans and analyse previous GCSE grade 9 essays so that I could see what is needed to get the highest grades. Hannah would always provide homework (either a question/full paper from the English Language or a whole essay from English Literature), which was incredibly useful as by the time it came to the exams, I had a bank of previous essays that I had written in every part of the course, which had been marked by Hannah and so had clear feedback on how to improve the essays. Moreover, Hannah would have her own PowerPoint filled with revision material such as useful quotes, which also greatly helped. Overall, Hannah was an enthusiastic and encouraging tutor who provided me with confidence through developing a large bank of revision material and improving my overall essay writing abilities. In my GCSE's, I was able to achieve grade 9's in both English Literature and Language. Tanvi Davuluri

Location
Home Tuition: Involves an English Literature tutor coming to your home in Dartford to provide one-on-one instruction. This offers convenience as you don't need to travel. Online Tuition: This can take place anywhere with an internet connection. Small Group Tuition: Typically with between 2 to 4 children, and often occurs in a physical location such as your home, though it can also be online.

Individual Attention
Home Tuition: Offers the highest level of individual attention, as the English Literature tutor focuses solely on one student. Online Tuition: Still allows for one-to-one attention, but it may be slightly less personal than home tuition due to potential distractions. Small Group Tuition: Offers less individual attention as the English Literature tutor must divide their time and attention among multiple students.

Cost
Home Tuition: This tends to be more expensive because it involves one-on-one teaching, and the English Literature tutor is required to travel to your home, in Dartford. Online Tuition: Often more affordable than home tuition as your English Literature tutor does not need to travel but may still cost more than small group tuition. Small Group Tuition: Generally, this is the most cost-effective option, as the costs are shared among several families.

Flexibility
Home Tuition: Offers flexibility in terms of scheduling and curriculum, as your English Literature tutor will only be working with your child. Online Tuition: Provides flexibility in terms of location and may offer a wider selection of English Literature tutors. Small Group Tuition: Lessons will be more difficult to schedule as lesson times will have to fit in with other families.

Interaction
Home Tuition: Offers in-person interaction, which can be beneficial for students who learn better through face-to-face communication. Online Tuition: Provides interaction through video conferencing tools and chat, which can be engaging but may not suit everyone's learning style. Small Group Tuition: Allows for peer interaction, which can benefit collaborative learning and discussions.

The choice between home, online, or small group English Literature tuition in Dartford depends on your preferences, budget, and the student's specific educational needs. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to consider these factors when deciding.
