What is Geography?

Geography is the study of the places and environments around us and the interaction between the people and these places and environments. Geography can be considered to be two broad areas. Physical Geography looks at the characteristics of the Earth at its surface and the atmosphere, such as seasons, climate, land, rivers and oceans. Human Geography is concerned with the relationship between people and how they live and operate in the different environments; populations, cultures, resources, political and economic activity. These two areas are not mutually exclusive; for example, a volcanic eruption can impact on both the surrounding environment and the behaviour of the people who live locally.

GCSE Geography Tuition

Geography at GCSE studies the Physical and Human Environments. In Physical Geography topics such as Plate Tectonics, Rivers and Coastlines, Climate Change and Sustaining the Environment are core topics across the Exam Boards. For Human Geography Urban Issues, the challenges and consequences of a changing Economic World and the Use and Management of Resources are frequently studied. There is also a fieldwork element (except for IGCSE), which involve the collection of data about a particular topic area, which may be Physical e.g. about rivers or coastlines, or human e.g. use of transport in cities. Primary (first hand) and Secondary data are collected, statistically analysed and presented in a report with the aid of appropriate graphs and diagrams.

Typically, there are three exam papers set, each between an hour and 90 minutes long, one based on Physical Geography: one on Human Geography and one on fieldwork and related issues.

A-Level Geography Tuition

Geography at A-Level builds on and extends the Physical and Human Geography themes studied at GCSE. Core Physical Geography themes include water and carbon cycles; Human geography themes global systems and changing places. Exams may be three 2-hour papers covering physical, human and synoptic questions, which bring together topics from across the specification, plus a 3000 to 4000-word report based on an extensive fieldwork investigation.

A-Level Geography can be useful for studying Geography, Environmental Science, Archaeology, Civil Engineering, Geology, Sociology.

Geography is an excellent foundation for careers such as Environmental Planning, Meteorology, Surveying, Teaching, Conservation, Tourism, Armed Forces or Police.

Location
Home Tuition: Involves a Geography tutor coming to your home in Hemel Hempstead to provide one-on-one instruction. This offers convenience as you don't need to travel. Online Tuition: This can take place anywhere with an internet connection. Small Group Tuition: Typically with between 2 to 4 children, and often occurs in a physical location such as your home, though it can also be online.

Individual Attention
Home Tuition: Offers the highest level of individual attention, as the Geography tutor focuses solely on one student. Online Tuition: Still allows for one-to-one attention, but it may be slightly less personal than home tuition due to potential distractions. Small Group Tuition: Offers less individual attention as the Geography tutor must divide their time and attention among multiple students.

Cost
Home Tuition: This tends to be more expensive because it involves one-on-one teaching, and the Geography tutor is required to travel to your home, in Hemel Hempstead. Online Tuition: Often more affordable than home tuition as your Geography tutor does not need to travel but may still cost more than small group tuition. Small Group Tuition: Generally, this is the most cost-effective option, as the costs are shared among several families.

Flexibility
Home Tuition: Offers flexibility in terms of scheduling and curriculum, as your Geography tutor will only be working with your child. Online Tuition: Provides flexibility in terms of location and may offer a wider selection of Geography tutors. Small Group Tuition: Lessons will be more difficult to schedule as lesson times will have to fit in with other families.

Interaction
Home Tuition: Offers in-person interaction, which can be beneficial for students who learn better through face-to-face communication. Online Tuition: Provides interaction through video conferencing tools and chat, which can be engaging but may not suit everyone's learning style. Small Group Tuition: Allows for peer interaction, which can benefit collaborative learning and discussions.

The choice between home, online, or small group Geography tuition in Hemel Hempstead depends on your preferences, budget, and the student's specific educational needs. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to consider these factors when deciding.

How are Hemel Hempstead schools performing?

We connect you to the best teachers who work across several of the best primary and secondary schools in Hemel Hempstead (some detailed below). This means we can reliably provide you with a local and experienced tutor that fits your needs.

Hemel Hempstead primary school performance:

The Hemel Hempstead area has 43 primary schools (one of the top being Two Waters Primary School with 28% of pupils achieving at a higher standard).

From their latest Oftsed report:
“This is an outstanding school. It has been transformed since the last inspection. At that time, the school had been through a succession of short-term leaders and standards had drifted. Since then, attainment has steadily risen. Pupils in the Year 6 class last year were unsettled by unplanned changes of teachers shortly before the national tests. This caused a dip in results in mathematics. Standards in English and mathematics, in both Key Stages 1 and 2, have otherwise been consistently high.”

The Hemel Hempstead local authority has an average of 67% of students meeting the expected standards in reading, writing, and maths at primary school age (vs England's average of 65%). And has an average of 13% achieving higher standard (vs England's average of 11%).

Hemel Hempstead secondary school performance:

The Hemel Hempstead area has 14 secondary schools (one of the top being The Hemel Hempstead School with 57% of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and Maths GCSEs).

From their latest Oftsed report:
“The Hemel Hempstead School is a good school where students' achievement is outstanding. This is because students make good progress as the result of good quality teaching and learning in most of their lessons. The majority of students enter the school with above average starting points and receive good support by teachers and other members of staff to achieve of their best. Most lessons are interesting, challenging and meet the needs of different groups of students. However, inspectors found that in a small minority of lessons this was not the case. In the less effective lessons, for example those dominated by the teacher, where students work predominantly from a text book, or copy from the board, students can lose interest and do not achieve to their potential. In some cases good behaviour can deteriorate.”

The Hemel Hempstead local authority has an average of 52% of students achieving grade 5 or above in English and Maths GCSEs (vs England's average of 43%). And has an average of 96% of students either staying in education or entering employment after GCSEs (vs England's average of 94%).

Hemel Hempstead Ofsted ratings:

76% of Hemel Hempstead schools have received at least a 'Good' Ofsted rating, with 3 schools receiving an 'Outstanding' rating in their last evaluation.
