You are your child's first teacher. Your home is your child's first classroom.

Parents help shape a child's emotional, social and physical development so they can thrive in school and beyond. As a parent, you must play your part in helping to prepare your children for school and helping them stay on track.

  • Create a daily family routine, including healthy eating and sleeping habits.
  • Provide a quiet place and a fixed time at home for homework.
  • Regularly look at school books and homework.
  • Talk with your child daily about their school work and activities.
  • Read to your child and be a role model by reading yourself.
  • Monitor and limit and monitor phones, gaming, computing, TV and social media.
  • Have high expectations and standards for your child's learning.
  • Attend all parent-teacher meetings and school events.
  • Employ a high-quality tutor to support your child's academic progress.
  • Use community resources with visits to a library, museums, theatres, and zoos and encourage participation in after-school clubs, arts, sports and music activities.
